A shock in Pakistan for the loss of the cricket team and the death of its coach
Pakistan is in a state of shock yesterday after a tragedy of
the cricket game over the weekend as the national team suffered a surprise
defeat to Ireland at the World Cup in Jamaica and the mysterious death of the
coach.
While headlines in the newspapers said that day was "a
black day for the history of cricket in Pakistan," the country began to
think about the future of cricket without coach Bob Wollmer and the
right-winger who announced his recovery following Pakistan's 3-0 defeat on Saturday.
The 58-year-old former South African coach, who played for
England between 1975 and 1981, was unconscious at the Kingston Hotel on Sunday
morning amid signs he had vomit and later died in hospital.
"The death of the coach is a big loss," he said.
"I apologize to the country because we could not meet the hopes we have
come here," he said after the turmoil that prompted angry fans inside the
country to burn puppets representing the players and the coach and called on
the government to withdraw bonuses and freeze their bank accounts. Pakistan's
defeat in the game has overshadowed protests and recent violence in Pakistan
over the dismissal of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
