15 Indian Muslims arrested for celebrating Pakistan's
victory over India at the Cricket World Cup
Indian police have arrested 15 Muslims and charged with
incitement and sedition for allegedly celebrating Pakistan's victory over India
in the final of the cricket World Cup.
Men aged between 19 and 35 were arrested in the suburb of
Barhanpur in the central state of Madhya Pradesh after local residents
complained they had chanted slogans in support of Pakistan and fired fireworks

"There was tension in the village of Mahd after the men
chanted slogans for Pakistan, distributed the sweets and lit candles in public
places," provincial police chief SS Barihar said Tuesday.
"We arrested these men on Monday evening after an
investigation, and there was an intention to provoke people and disturb public
peace, and was active against the nation," he said.
The men were detained on charges of sedition, incitement and
criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code. They were referred to a local
court, whose requests for bail were rejected and sent to prison pending trial.
The maximum penalty for incitement and sedition in India is
life imprisonment, legal experts say these laws are among the most difficult
laws in the country.
India and Pakistan, the neighboring countries of South Asia,
have a history of hostile relations - and the famous competition in cricket as
well.
Millions of fans are eagerly awaiting cricket in the two
countries, often with very strong competition.
But on Sunday Pakistan won India convincingly and crowned
the tournament in London, causing the sadness of Indian fans.
